Fox News covering Hackers

HeatSync Labs was featured during this fox news segment and at the end they mention Hacker Haven. They only commented on the drone programming briefly, but hopefully more cool people find out about both Hacker Haven and HeatSync.

Drone programming and Pinball at Hacker Haven

Tomorrow is Hacker Haven; Tuesday between 6-7 pm. I've been told there will be soldering again.

Last Tuesday Ryan brought a drone for people to fly around using commands on the computer.

The Scientific Mom brought the pinball machine her daughter and her made.

Here is a close up of a the 3d printer. Not sure what was printing.

As I had hoped the Hacker Haven community is coming together really well. We have regulars attending that are helping to make this great. My plan is to make it out once at least once a month and try to bring value and new ideas to share. The reason I have been able to share things I've learned about making is because I have learned from the community at HeatSync Labs.

I will be on a panel at Maker Summit discussing education through making. This event is focused on those growing the maker community. Please share this with anyone that wants to be involved.

More Hacker Haven Fun and Photos

The other day at Hacker Haven we had lots of fun. Photos from The Scientific Mom.

Me and another hacker who loves making beautiful symmetrical things with Kinects.

Designing squishy controls to play MineCraft with the Makey Makey.

Here are the robots packed up and ready to head out.

A motorized Lego crane build.

Light up Lego's. These have several modes; on, off, or flashing slow, or flashing fast.

Everyone is having a great time at Hacker Haven you should come too!

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Make sure to join us today from 6-7 pm for Hacker Haven. I have several Drawdios to have fun with. I got one for Hacker Haven because they have great play value. Come see how much fun they are!

Friday, October 11, 2013

At Hacker Haven last Tuesday we soldered Maker solder badges which have cool color changing LED's as eyes.

Ryan shared some photos of the space.

I've been busy soldering together 3 Drawdio Kits. One is for Hacker Haven, and the others are for my portable electronics / robotics workshop kit.

Thursday, October 3, 2013

Tuesday we had a great time at Hacker Haven building a Lego crane that operates with a dc motor, controlling a computer by conducting electricity through 4 people using the Makey Makey, and checking out a Raspberry Pi controlling motors.

We had 4 HeatSync Labs members including myself helping people learn about electronics.

Join us next week for our soldering workshop and you can take home a Learn to Solder Skill Badge.

Hacker Haven Photos by the Scientific Mom

Here are some actions photos here the The Scientific Mom took when visiting Hacker Haven. There were way more people there that night not pictured.

Snap Circuit launching the propeller (red thing in her hands)

The simple box robot I made for getting people started with servo's and sensors

An instrument I made with Adafruit colorful buttons and an Arduino

A member at HeatSync Labs who lives near Hacker Haven was considering donating tools he no longer uses. Not sure what other tools he is considering donating, but he mentioned an oscilloscope. We just want to be sure the things will get used. Come out and show support of having more tools. Just look at that space ready to be filled up.

Thanks again to the Scientific Mom for her photos and her post about Hacker Haven.

Phoenix Hacker Haven 3d Printing

The Burton Barr library will be getting a 3d printer for their Hacker Haven. If you or someone you know can help them get the most out of this technology please help make it happen. They can use someone who knows about calibrating the printer, and also teaching others how to design in 3d.

They can use people with all kinds of backgrounds and skills. If you don't think you have any skills to offer you can start learning by coming down and soon enough you have ways of helping those just getting started.

The last 3 weeks at Hacker Haven I have been helping people learn about electronics and Arduino micro-controllers. I learned how to use them at the HeatSync Labs in Mesa. HeatSync is a hackerspace that is open to the public (check the HeatSync calendar for hours).

Having such an amazing community helping me as I learn new skills has been a tremendous experience. This is why I'm putting so much effort into helping Hacker Haven.

Introduction

The Phoenix Burton Barr library is starting a Hacker Haven (AKA maker space). The library website is being updated so an official web page is not happening quickly. Until then I am starting this unofficial blog to maximize awareness and discussion for getting things going.

Currently Hacker Haven is Tuesdays from 6-7 PM located at the Burton Barr Library (map inside).
These places are often called different things; makerspace, hackerspace, creation station. Show up ready to work on making things and help others do the same.

Great things are taking shape and it's great to see it happening. We've had over 25 people out to one event while kids launched Snap Circuit propellers to the top of the room. We have electronics kits, but the goal is not limited to electronics. Check the Phoenix Library calendar for other making themed events including paper engineering, and digital art classes.

Please post questions and comments in this blog. I will be making a post with their wishlist if you would like to donate things they can use. What kinds of projects would you like to make? Are you an expert on things you can share? Please spread the word!
